Joe Kovacs is the only man to win a shot put medal at the last three global championship. He is the 2015 IAAF World Championships Gold Medalist, the 2016 Olympic Games Silver Medalist and the 2017 IAAF World Championships Silver Medalist.
An all-state football star in high school, Joe took up throwing to keep fit in the off-season. When Joe’s mother, a former thrower, saw his poor form, she took it upon herself to become the team’s coach. Soon, Joe was producing some of the top throws in the nation and earned a scholarship to Penn State University. The warm mother-son coaching arrangement was especially meaningful because Joe lost his father to cancer when he was 7 years old.
Joe’s breakout came at the 2012 Olympic Trials, where he placed 4th. With the confidence of that top showing, Joe has never failed to medal at a global championships since.
